Standard FibresPolymeric fibres have been used within Lead Acid Battery (including EFB, AGM, Wet, Gel) Plates as a physical reinforcement of the plate. This is an important component which makes a significant impact on the performance; by reinforcing the plates, improving strength and rigidity to help combat severe road conditions and prevent plate failure via dislocation of the active material from the grid. Following testing involving vigorous vibration of the plates, mimicking general use, the kind of vibration the battery and the plates may be subjected to during normal road conditions & then dropped from a height; to simulate potential impact; e.g. pothole, collision, etc. We can then quantify the level of paste that is dislocated. In these tests, plates without fibre were shown to lose an average of 35% of their active material, whereas plates reinforced with Goonvean Fibres? standard polymeric fibres lost less than 1%. Providing an essential level of support to the functionality and performance of the battery of the battery. Key to this high level of paste retention is the high accuracy of cut and absence of any fusion (0%) of the fibres which can score the plates or give rise to uneven dispersion and therefore weak areas.

The 2.1 dtex short cut polyester fibre is the preferred option when the end use requires a finer diameter filament e.g. pharmaceutical and food packaging, however, all polyester grades can be used in harsher environments such as lead acid batteries.

Precision cut Polyester fibre is a very strong and stable manmade fibre that is widely used in many industries. Polyester is resistant to stretching and shrinking and perhaps more importantly for industrial applications it is resistant to abrasion and acid degradation. Polyester has a relatively high specific gravity, leading to it dispersing well in water and a relatively high melting point making it a good all round choice for a variety of applications. The short cut 3.3 decitex grade is widely used in the manufacture of lead oxide paste with cut lengths 1.6mm and 3mm being most common.

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging, textiles and automotive components. It is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids making it an ideal material for use in Lead Acid Batteries and concrete.
