Denier

Unit of weight expressing the size or coarseness of a natural or synthetic fibre. Defined as the mass in grams per 9000 metres of a fiber.

Decitex

Unit of weight expressing the size or coarseness of a natural or synthetic fibre. Defined as the mass in grams per 10,000 metres of a fiber.

Intumescent

Means to swell up or expand. Used here to describe fire-proofing properties when used within paint / coating systems.

Micron

A micron (μm) is a micro-meter (a millionth of a metre). Also one-thousandth of a millimetre.

Precision cut

Means made so as to vary minimally from a set standard. Used here to describe fibers (mainly synthetic) processed by guillotine or rotary cutting systems. A consistent length is maintained with a tolerance achieved of typically +/ – 10%.

Random Cut

Used here to describe fibers (both natural & synthetic) processed by granulation cutting systems. Product is chopped in a cutting chamber until it is small enough to pass through the desired screen size. Air conveying is generally used and fibres can pass through the installed screen in a variety of orientations or ‘random’ manner. The size range will in statistical terms be described as a ‘normal’ distribution.
